Walter Pitts was a American logician and neuroscientist who, along with Warren McCulloch, proposed one of the first artificial neural network models. His work, as seen in the 1943 paper 'A Logical Calculus of the Ideas Immanent in Nervous Activity', influenced the development of artificial intelligence, cognitive science, and computer science. Pitts' collaboration with McCulloch, as well as other notable figures like Alan Turing and Norbert Wiener, helped shape the foundation of modern computer science and neuroscience.
